The problem turned out to be likely in cmc. That line in gsl seems to come from a call from gsl_sf_gamma, which is called from I3CascadeParameterization. If cmc gets passed a cascade with pathological ( e.g. NaN ) energy IceSim? aborts with the same error message. Guards and tests were added to cmc ( V02-00-02 r90065 ). I'm going to leave this open for now though.
